    梁教授1987年获得美国柏克莱加州大学机械工程博士学位,现为美国佐治亚理工学院机械系先进制造学科终身教授,新加坡国立大学、上海交通大学、日本国立宇都宫大学、台湾大学及成功大学客座教授。梁教授致力于精密化、智能化、自动化、微型化、永续化,及远距化的高效能机械制造工艺、设备、系统、科学与技术研究。指导70余位研究生及访问学者,发表学术论文近400篇,并应邀在全球20多个国家发表70多场专题演讲及会议主题演讲。

  

Physics-based Modeling and Optimization of High-Performance Machining

  

Abstract

High-performance machining delivers maximum achievable part quality, process competitiveness, and ecological compatibility through strategic utilization of cutters, machine tools, operation configuration, and process parameters. To this, a thorough understanding of the underlying mechanics affecting performance attributes such as tool life, part integrity, air quality, etc., and how they are attributed to tooling conditions, operation configuration, and process parameters, is required.This presentation reviews and summarizes a series of Physics-based analysis methodologies to explore the fundamental mechanics of machining in the context of thermal, mechanical, tribological, and metallurgical microstructure effects and their interactions. In this study, cutting temperatures, cutting forces and stresses, grain size evolution, crystallographic orientation change, phase transformation, residual stress, tool life, and aerosol generation are quantitatively described as explicit functions of tool geometries, cutting speed, chip load, cutting fluid properties, interface tribological conditions, and the cutter/workpiece material constants.The analyses facilitate the prediction of machining performance attributes thereby allowing up-front planning of machining processes in achieving first-and-every-part-right manufacturing.

    Steven Y. Liang holds a 1987 Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California at Berkeley, was Director of Manufacturing Education Program at Georgia Tech from 2001 to 2008, and has been Morris M. Bryan, Jr. Professor in Mechanical Engineering for Advanced Manufacturing Systems since 2004.From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Liang served as Chief Technical Officer then President (Corporate)of Walsin Lihwa Corp., a US$6+ billion revenue publicly-traded entity in the manufacturing of advanced materials and communication/power cables.

Dr. Liang's research lies in precision engineering, extreme manufacturing, and technology innovation.He has supervised over 80 Post-Doctoral studies, Ph.D. dissertations, and M.S. theses and has authored in excess of 400 book chapters, archival journal papers, and professional conference articles in these areas.He has been invited to deliver more than 60 keynote speeches and seminars at industries, peer institutions, and professional conferences in over 20 countries on various topics related to manufacturing science and technology.

Dr. Liang served as President of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution (NAMRI) and Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Division of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (MED/ASME).Dr. Liang is the recipient of many prestigious awards including the Robert B. Douglas Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Ralph R. Teetor Education Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award of ASME, Milton C. Shaw Modal of ASME, and Distinguished Alumni Award of National Cheng Kung University.Liang is Fellow of both ASME and SME.
